Guerra’s Six Touchdowns Lead Seminole Past Bushland in Season Opener

SEMINOLE, Texas — The Seminole Indians opened the football season Friday night with an offensive explosion, overcoming an early deficit and pulling away for a 62-42 victory over the Bushland Falcons.

The Indians found themselves trailing 7-6 after a back-and-forth opening quarter, but Seminole flipped the momentum in a huge way during the second quarter. The Indians erupted for 27 points before halftime, taking a commanding 33-14 lead into the locker room.

Sophomore running back Buddha Guerra was at the center of the offensive onslaught. Guerra turned in a monster performance in his first game of the season, rushing for 296 yards and six touchdowns, repeatedly finding the end zone as the Indians built their lead.

Quarterback Jacob Gonzales was equally impressive through the air. Gonzales finished the night with 288 passing yards and three touchdowns while throwing zero interceptions, helping Seminole keep the Falcons' defense off balance throughout the game.

The Indians' passing attack also produced three touchdown connections, with Jaycen Robledo, Gavyn Knelsen and Guerra each hauling in a touchdown pass from Gonzales.

Seminole continued to pour it on in the second half, eventually building a 47-14 advantage and putting the game seemingly out of reach.

Bushland, however, refused to go quietly.

The Falcons used a trick play to strike for a touchdown, then recovered an onside kick to create another scoring opportunity and inject some life back into the game. Bushland continued to battle, adding to its point total and making the final score much closer than the Indians' commanding lead had suggested.

In the end, Seminole's early offensive surge proved too much to overcome.

The Indians closed out the season opener with a 62-42 victory, starting the season 1-0 behind a spectacular performance from Guerra and a poised night from Gonzales.

With 296 rushing yards and six touchdowns from their sophomore running back and nearly 300 yards passing from their quarterback, the Indians showed plenty of firepower in their opening-week victory.

Seminole will now hit the road for its next challenge. The Indians will travel to Shallowater next week to take on the Mustangs, looking to carry the momentum from their season-opening victory into Week 2.
